BEARS SEEK DHARMA

The wildlife that lives in the forest seems to want to make a closer connection to the abbey’s human residents. A mother black bear and her not so little cub strolled into the garden one morning and sampled some of the apples on our old tree by the house as well as some of the berries on a large Hawthorne.

They came 3 days in a row and have not been seen since. Signs that they are still around were evident on an evening walk this week. It is wonderful to see the other sentient beings that live in the forest although we would feel better if they would not hang out in the orchard. It can be quite a surprise!

Baby bear tries to hide behind the berry bush.
Mother bear (affectionately called Baratsana) comes calling looking for her wayward child.
The cub comes up the hill below the kitchen and heads for the berry bush again. Forgot to close the gate! Oh well!
UPDATE: A not so small baby bear came and paid another visit to our garden last week. After he sauntered past the basement steps, a few of the abbey folks chased him up this big fir tree. He left shortly afterwards. All the apples were harvested the day before so he left without lunch.
