PARTICIPATE IN AND SUPPORT THE CHENREZIG RETREAT FROM AFAR

Dec. 13, 2006 to March 15, 2007 a group of people will do Chenresig retreat at Sravasti Abbey. This practice is an excellent way to develop love and compassion, as well as to purify negative karma and create vast positive potential. Chenresig is the Buddha of Compassion, also known as Avalokiteshvara or Kuan Yin. Reciting Chenresig’s mantra while visualizing Chenresig’s enlightening activities soothes the mind and deepens our compassion.

We would like to offer those who are unable to attend an opportunity to make a connection with the retreat and to participate in it. You can do this by doing at least one session of Chenresig meditation a day during the time of the retreat. In this way, you will feel the support of a group of people doing the same meditation and will give your support to them, inspiring the practice of those doing retreat at the abbey.

To participate you would need to commit to doing at least one session of the Chenresig practice with 21 recitations (or more) of the long mantra every day and 1080 recitations of the short mantra (10 mallas)—om mani padme hum—during the retreat. This would probably be a session of about 40 minutes to one hour. If you are interested in doing this, please download the Chenresig sadhana (pdf) (en Español) (pdf) (the text with the visualization, prayers, mantra, etc. led by Ven. Chodron). The explanation of how to do the Chenresig meditation is contained in Ven. Chodron’s book, Cultivating a Compassionate Heart: The Yoga Method of Chenresig, published by Snow Lion. During the retreat you may also want to do some guided meditations on love and compassion, and the taking and giving meditation. Also, you can listen to some mp3 teachings on Chenresig meditation from Venerable Chodron on her website. Here is a heartfelt appreciation from a participant.

Please if you will participate long distance in this way. If you would like, send us a photo of yourself to place in the meditation hall at the Abbey, symbolizing your participation. We welcome you into the community of practitioners developing compassion by means of the Chenresig meditation!

We welcome any food or financial support you would like to offer to the retreatants and rejoice in the positive potential of your generosity. Ven. Chodron does a Q&A session with the retreatants every week during the retreat. We will post these on www.thubtenchodron.org as the audio editing is completed. If you would like to transcribe these teachings so that others, including the inmates who do the retreat from afar, have access to them, please . This year the retreatants will not do the transcribing, so we are relying on your assistance.
