FUTURE PLANS: CHENRESIG HALL

After we complete the needed monastic residence, the guest house, Chenresig Hall, will be the next major building project. Chenresig Hall will include a reception area, kitchen and dining facilities, and guest accommodations.

Chenresig (Kuan Yin, Kannon, Avalokiteshvara) is the Buddha of Compassion. With one-thousand arms, Chenresig reaches out to care for all living beings.

Here is the site of the future Chenresig Hall in summer.

At present, many activities at the Abbey occur in the house. We eat, sleep, cook, work, type, edit, have meetings, hold informal Dharma discussions there. When we have more than a handful of guests for retreats and programs, the kitchen becomes difficult to navigate. Storing groceries for enough people (and finding them again in the back of the fridge or bottom of the cabinet) is challenging.

Here is the Chenresig Hall site in winter.

Cooking involves a search for empty counter space, serving food means bumping into each other, and finding a place to sit in the dining room is impossible. Bedrooms are limited, and thus so is the number of people who can attend retreats and programs.

We would like to offer our guests better accommodations so that more of you can come to practice the Dharma here.

Chenresig Hall will be one of the largest buildings at the Abbey. As presently envisioned, it will be built in two phases:

  • Phase I: Entry hall, large kitchen, large dining room, multi-purpose room, and accommodation for over 40 people
  • Phase II: Accommodation for over 20 more people.

Depending on the growth of the Abbey, we expect to begin construction on Chenresig Hall in about five years.
