Creating Peace in a Chaotic World.

Helping people in their work

Venerable Chodron offers people and pet blessings when the Abbey hosts the Heart Shrine Relic Tour.

“All of you together have created a safe place for people like me to unwind enough so as to look within at potential kindness, wisdom, and love while recognizing those strong habit patterns that obscure those qualities.”

Rachel Simons, Missoula, Montana

Twenty-five people of all spiritual backgrounds came together for the Activism with Altruism Retreat.  We explored how to bring joy into the essential (and sometimes frustrating) work of protecting the environment or supporting human rights without falling into anger or despair.

With your support, we will make these teachings and discussions into a booklet for free distribution and offer a similar retreat next year.

Training Monastics

“Thank you for (establishing) Sravasti Abbey.  Seeing (these new monastics has) changed so much for me.  It really is possible . . . I absolutely believe in the monastic tradition and see that when one has gotten over the hump of attachment, ordaining would be essential.  In the past, that seemed so unrealistic, but now I see it is something possible for those fortunate ones.

      Julie Rae, Seattle, Washington

In September, Sravasti Abbey ordained our second novice nun.  Twelve qualified men and women attended the Exploring Monastic Life course in August.  Four of them are now full-time residents.  Two more plan to move to the Abbey in 2008.  They are practicing strictly to keep the vows of non-harming and benefiting others, vows that have the effect of generating peace.

With your kind offerings, we can begin to expand the facilities necessary to accommodate the growing community as well as the guests who come to practice.

Sharing the Dharma

“Every week, I go on the Sravasti Abbey website to check for updates.  It's so common to see tragedies, sufferings, and malice portrayed by the media.  It gives me inspiration to see the beautiful activities of other people.  The Sravasti Abbey website provides such inspiration.”

   Ulric Legouest, Portland, Oregon

Venerable Thubten Chodron continues her rigorous teaching schedule, freely offering the Dharma to thousands on three continents.  Her web site and books—including this year’s new release, Meditations on the Gradual Path, with audio CDsreach thousands more.  This year’s new telephone Dharma teachings have brought peace-making alive for  30 to 50 weekly listeners.  (To join us write office@sravasti.org.)

Your offerings support Ven. Chodron’s living, working, and travel to keep sharing the Buddha’s advice for living peaceful lives.
