THE PATIO IS COMPLETED!!

Folks who visit the Abbey regularly know that the Abbey isn’t being built in a day. So it is with the patio. With help from over a dozen volunteers who, over the past year have shared their ideas on how to build a patio to increase the safety of the lower entrance to the house in a challenging location, as well as those folks who rolled up their sleeves to help with the pouring, the end is now in sight.

On May 12, 2007 a wonderful group of volunteers with a variety of skills and physical abilities came together and made the patio a reality. It was hard work but a lot of fun as the crew worked beautifully together under the guidance of our crew leader Sean Garner from Missoula.

The concrete company kindly opened its doors for our 7 yard of concrete delivery which amazed all of us.They usually require a minimum of 25 yards for Saturdays!

The final touches on an addition of concrete pavers and a landing will be done this week. Now we have a great seating area overlooking the garden as well as a safe walking area into the house. The stairs will get a railing and some pavers to match this summer.

The volunteer concrete crew offers their food and reflects on the generosity of others before lunch and the arrival of the concrete truck. Wendy Garner made a wonderful hearty vegetarian picnic complete with homemade cookies and sun tea.
Ready to pour! Tim, Dad Sean and Carl wait for the cement truck, Tim was a great help guiding the cement down the chute into the forms.
Kristen sits safely out of the way as the driver carefully aims the truck across the slope. Talk about skillful means!
Venerable Chodron places the first shovel of concrete into place. May the Dharma in the West have a solid strong foundation.
The crew worked as a great team taking turns running the heavy wheelbarrows of concrete.
As the day grew hotter the crew had to move fast to get the concrete laid before it set up.
Venerable helps Sean level out the concrete from the doorway. Abbesses learn a lot of skills starting up an Abbey!
Kevin gives concrete finishing a try.
During the FOSA meeting a week later, Deb and Carl add the new concrete pavers that add a nice touch to the solid slab.
Carl and Nanc pour the concrete step to the landing to the patio Two more days and it will all be finished.
Carl created the design for the pavers which provides a welcoming visual through the gate onto the patio
