ABBEY LIFE, JUNE 2007

No two days are the same at the Abbey. From family visits to wildlife antics, to spraying knapweed along Bodhisattva path, to figuring what to do with the old root cellar, each day presents an opportunity to practice the Dharma with patience, humor and wisdom. Now with the Abbey community growing, it’s easy to see the unique ways each resident and visitor contributes to the growth of the Dharma. Practicing in community exemplifies the power and the authenticity of the Buddha’s teachings. Sravasti Abbey is truly becoming a haven of peace in a chaotic world.

The Abbey receives a visit from Venerable Chodron’s brother, Russ, his wife, Jane and their son, Josh. They find the Abbey visit very inspiring and beautiful and hope to return again.
Josh practices one pointed concentration on a large pine cone as Venerable offers him a second one to focus on.
Tracy places a Tara tsa tsa in the nook of a tree. There are many of these little figures hidden about the Abbey land.
Om Tare Tuttara Ture Soha!
Tracy brings her cat Digit who has died from old age to the abbey. The Abbey has located a pet cemetery at the top of the property overlooking a lovely stand of trees

Tracy says goodbye. Venerable leads us all in reciting the Medicine Buddha mantra and wishing Digit a precious human rebirth. Nanc buries the ashes of her cat Yeshe who had lived at the Abbey 3 years ago.
The native wild roses are exceptionally lovely this year and will supply the wildlife with rose hips for winter food.
Tara graces the entrance to the Abbey and overlooks the meditation hall inspiring us to take refuge in the 3 Jewels.
A mother squirrel captures one of the prayer flags and sets to task dismantling it for her nest. With a little help from the Abbey residents she was triumphant.
The locust tree is one of Harold’s Unruh’s stunning legacies left to enjoy.
The Buddha Aspiration Project is started with the emptying of the root cellar and the removal of large rocks at the entrance.
Om Ah Hum is painted on the now closed entrance to the root cellar which will now be backfilled.
The Abbey garden as an offering to the Buddhas is glorious in the late spring.
Nanc rings the gong to gather everyone for the practice session on Sharing the Dharma Day.
The group gathers at the entrance after having removed their shoes before entering the hall.
The meditation hall is filling with folks getting ready to listen to Nanc who will share what she learned on the chapter about anger and the other disturbing attitudes.
After the talk everyone shares a potluck lunch before going back into the hall in the afternoon to share in a group discussion. Many folks find the discussions very beneficial; we learn a lot from each other.
Carl, Kevin and Scott become Dharma friends quickly after a weekend of offering service.
Donna and Chris, two volunteers from the local Couer D’Alene Dharma Friends find the Abbey a wonderful place to deepen their practice and their Dharma friendship.
