THE STILLNESS AND BEAUTY OF WINTER AT THE ABBEY

It is hard to say which season of the year is the most glorious at Sravasti Abbey. Whether it is the emerald green freshness of spring, the dazzling summer display of flowering trees and perennials of summer, the golden grasses shimmering under a cobalt blue sky in autumn, or the sparkling stillness of the evergreens and rarified air in winter, each season brings us an opportunity to offer to the Buddhas of the three times an exquisite mandala.

The Buddha statue overlooks the garden facing south.

The flowering plum covered in a profusion of tiny pink flowers in summer strikes a lovely pose in its winter garb.

Young ponderosa pines stand in a wintry display.

This picture, taken from the barn, shows the futhre site of the future monastic residence. It is the meadow beyond the trees behind the turkey.

The Abbey’s cozy retreat cabin stands at the far end of the garden and offers a quiet place to practice.

The old apple tree has a wonderful structure and is a producer of the Abbey’s now famous applesauce.

The story goes that Harold, the property’s former owner, was planning to cut down this large Ponderosa for lumber when he heard a meadowlark sing from its tree top. It stands today as one of the largest conifers on the property.

As you leave the meditation hall and look to the northeast to see this lovely view.
