THE SILENCE OF DECEMBER

Winter at the Abbey is a quieter time for the residents. This year we were joined by a few visitors who found the silence of December a wonderful reprieve from their busy lives and an opportunity to offer service.

The floor plan for the monastic residence moved closer to its final design when a number of the Abbey residents and Jo Simpson met with Tim Wilson, the architect for the new building, to work out details. A visit from a wonderful Korean bhikshuni inspired the community as she shared stories of her life as a monastic.

Venerable Chodron and Venerable Snim in the garden before winter sets in

Venerable Snim gives a wonderfully open talk on her journey as a monastic.

Casey spends time audio-editing some of Venerable’s talks during offering service.

A lot gets done around the dining table at the Abbey. Here Venerable Chodron, Venerable Tarpa and Carl discuss plans for the kitchen remodel planned for early spring..

Chris’s wonderful enthusiasm is welcomed as she prepares lunch for the community. She also transcribes a large amount of Dharma teachings during the day.

Carl and Alec spend quality time with Venerable asking questions and sharing practice insights.

Some of the Abbey community listens to Tim’s explanation of roof design in his office. We are all learning a great deal about building and building materials at this stage.

The relationship between Tim and his staff at Momentum Architecture and the Abbey community is developing into one of mutual respect and trust.

Mischievous Carl isn’t really going to dump a load of snow on unsuspecting Frederick below. Are you Carl?

Kevin chisels out the ice dam that built up in the gutters after a hard freeze.

Venerable Semkye on the roof of the meditation hall with its 3 foot drifts. The winter so far has brought a lot of snow and an opportunity for shoveling which is great exercise and a chance to get some fresh air.

Savanah and Larry take their turn baking in the kitchen. The banana-cranberry bread is delicious!

Venerable Chodron feeds one of the turkeys that is spending winter in the Abbey garden. Now if we can just get them to circumambulate the Buddha statue. Maybe a trail of corn on the path?
