LAM RIM RETREAT - 2008

New Year’s is a time when many people wine, dine and entertain. At Sravasti Abbey, 17 people spent the long weekend attending a silent Lam Rim retreat which focused on clarity through introspection.

With teachings by Venerable and guided  meditations lead by the Abbey residents, the participants connected to the Dharma and to each other through the retreat experience. Many were inspired to take what they learned about meditation and the Dharma back home and incorporate their new understandings into their lives.

Icicles and prayer flags hang together on the west side of the meditation hall.

Inside the meditation hall the warm smiling face of the Buddha awaits the retreatants arrival.

Offering a mandala before a teaching garners a lot of positive potential and makes the mind open to receive the Dharma.

This hand gesture symbolizes the universe you are offering to the Buddhas.

Teachings at the Abbey always have an element of humor where we usually laugh at ourselves and the crazy things we do to find happiness.

Group discussions that help us pin point where we need the Dharma most in our lives prove to be enormously helpful to the participants.

Venerable Tarpa and Mike share what Dharma teachings have worked for them.

Carl the Abbey’s resident yoga practitioner works out some of the tightness that comes with sitting.

Barbara makes all the soups for Medicine Meal with lots of love and seasoning.

“Nancy, we’re supposed to be in quiet and reflective mood, you know?”

Pam from Boise, Idaho in a quiet moment before a walk.

It’s Heather’s first time to the Abbey and she says it has been a very fruitful retreat.

Frederick who aspires to move to the Abbey next year brings a warm smile and heart to the Abbey.

Out of deep respect we all bow to the Buddhas, bodhisattvas and all the holy beings.

Kevin makes an offering to Venerable in gratitude for her teachings and guidance.

Karry, one of Venerable’s students for many years, shares a joyful moment with her teacher.

A group picture on the final day. What virtuous collective karma we have created!
