Winter at the Abbey

Winter at the Abbey (en Español)

Back to 2011 Gallery

Getting the Abbey ready for winter and at the same time preparing to go into a 3 month retreat requires a mind that is flexible, focused, and full of joy.  Here is how the community and its wonderful guests make it look easy with bodhicitta as the source of inspiration.

19 year old Zach jumped right in and helped clean pounds of cultured stone that will be re-used on the meditation hall.

Ingrid, a consultant on educational web programs, helps Ven. Tarpa and Ven. Samten fine tune the Abbey’s online SAFE (Sravasti Abbey Friends Education) program.

Karuna says Hi! to Maitri as they take a walk together on their new leashes. Our little wildlife friends appreciate it very much.

“We’re getting organized!” says Ven. Semkye as Ven. Samten smiles in agreement.

Karuna makes friends with His Holiness the Dalai Lama.

Ven. Yeshe kindly mends some of the sangha’s robes.

Sravasti Abbey has a full bhikshuni sangha with the ordination of Vens. Jigme and Chonyi.

Isaac and Susan help organize and redistribute dozens of work gloves that the community needs for many projects.

No task too small for Susan who practices
cultivating her kind and generous heart.

A frosty morning greets the Buddha

Meditation teachers Dori, Sarah,s and Mary visit for the day and make a food offering to the sangha.

Atenea from Mexico City helps clean the altar for the upcoming retreat.

Jon is very respectful of the holy objects.

Neither snow nor wind will keep China and Atenea from their joyful task of setting up meditation seats.

Rachel, who is cooking for the winter retreat, puts on her forestry hat and fells some dead trees for the Abbey.

Isaac from Texas gets a first hand experience
of working in the forest.

Spectacular sun breaks through the ice and fog.
