The New WellThe New Well (en Español)Back to 2010 GalleryThe lack of a winter snow pack over the past decade has affected aquifers in many areas in the U.S., including in N.E. Washington State where the Abbey is located. The output from the existing well decreased noticeably this past fall, so we drilled another well. At 380 feet and 9 gallons per minute the new well will support the growing water needs of the Abbey. As part of our continuing commitment to water conservation, the Abbey community will maintain its wise water usage for the years and decades to come. To support this effort click here and mention the well in the comment section. ![]() The site of the new well is above the meditation hall in the upper meadow. ![]() John Perry prepares the road and the landing where the well will be drilled. ![]() The landing must be level and easily accessible for future maintenance. ![]() No, it’s not an illusion! This huge drilling rig is suspended off the ground. ![]() The well drilling tower is 30 feet tall and does indeed drill into the earth. 20 foot pieces of section pipe are placed into the well as it is drilled. ![]() The well is capped and will be connected to the main water and electrical lines next spring. The site is too muddy to excavate now, and doing so would destroy the terrain. Photo Gallery |
