Two Important Building Projects for Summer

Two Important Building Projects for Summer

Back to 2005 Gallery

Two important projects were started in early Summer 2005 to provide much-needed functional spaces at the Abbey. These include

A lot of volunteer effort has supported these projects, demonstrating just how effective the offerings of service and donations can be. There is still quite a bit of work to do on both the writing studio and the multi-purpose room, and thus we are gratefully accepting financial support to help us meet our project funding goal of $35,000.

More volunteers will be needed over the summer, so please consider joining us. You'll enjoy the regular Dharma schedule at the Abbey, good friendships, and the beauty of our meadows, forests and garden.

If you would like to make a contribution, your support will directly affect the important work at the Abbey in spreading the Dharm.

Writing Studion/Meditation Cabin

The first project is the construction of a small writing studio/meditation cabin in the garden. This simple room will provide Venerable Chodron with a quiet space to work and will also serve as a location for meditation retreat. A lovely view of the valley will be seen from the windows and deck on the east side and a bay window will offer a cozy reading space looking out on the willow tree to the north. Windows in the south will provide passive solar heating in the winter.

The room, entry way, and “bathroom” with a composting toilet will total 364 square feet (outside measurements). We will hire professionals for the excavation and concrete work, and Dave Ferre has kindly volunteered to do most of the building. Other volunteers are welcome and needed to assist Dave this summer. This is a terrific opportunity to learn about building and provide a service as part of your practice. The estimated cost for the project is $21,000.

Meeting Room/Multi-Purpose Space

The bay of the barn will be turned into the Meeting Room/Mulitpurpose Space.

The second building project this summer will be to transform the bay of the barn into a meeting room and multi-purpose space for the Abbey. This will provide residents and visitors to the Abbey with much-needed space for meetings, classes, and other uses that frequently come up. We'll need the help of professionals for excavation and concrete work here too, and some volunteers have already stepped forward to complete the inside. The inside of the sitting room will measure 531 square feet. We estimate the remodel will cost $9,500.

Big Dig:

Excavating for the writing studio/meditation
cabin is the first step. Venerable points out
where the meditation cabin should be to Nanc.
Jan explains it later to the excavators (Keep
your eye on the rock retaining walls).
