VENERABLE CHODRON’S VISIT TO DHARAMSALA

Venerable Chodron had a fruitful trip to India: she attended His Holiness the Dalai Lama's teachings on emptiness in Delhi and then went to Dharamsala where she visited her teacher, Geshe Sonam Rinchen, connected with old friends such as Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo, and gave Dharma talks at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics, Tushita Center in Delhi, Tushita Retreat Center in Dharamsala, and Thosamling Nuns Institute.

Venerable Chödron talks to nuns and laywomen (and two men) about “how to live in community with mindfulness” at the Thösamling Institute for International Buddhist Women in Dharamsala, India, on April 5, 2008. Venerable Chödron has visited Thösamling several times.

Venerable Tenzin Sangmo (hands folded together), the Dutch nun who founded and runs Thösamling, and Venerable Lhundup Damchö, to her left, are among those listening intently to Venerable Chödron’s Dharma talk.

Women from all over the world come to study and do retreat at Thösamling. It’s a Rime, non-sectarian nunnery and learning institution offering Buddhist nuns and laywomen the opportunity to live and practice as part of a spiritual community.

Venerable Chödron enjoys lunch with the nuns of Thösamling.

Venerable Chödron offers one of her teachers, Geshe Sonam Rinchen, a postcard of the Medicine Buddha as a souvenir from Sravasti Abbey at his home in Dharamsala, India, on March 30, 2008.

As he watches a video about Sravasti Abbey, Geshe Sonam Rinchen is pleased to see what the residents and supporters of Sravasti Abbey are doing.

Geshe Sonam Rinchen gets quite animated as he answers Venerable Chodron’s detailed questions about intricate points of Buddhist philosophy.

Jetsunma Tenzin Palmo and Venerable Chodron had a chance catch up and enjoy “lots of nuns’ talk” at the home of mutual friends in Dharamsala on April 4, 2008. The two bhikshunis have been friends for many years.

On April 2, 2008, Venerable Chödron spoke to monks at the Institute of Buddhist Dialectics about how to keep their vows (and avoid the temptation to disrobe, move to the West, and get a job washing dishes!). The monks, however, were much more interested in discussing the question of the Bhikshuni ordination. Though they were shy at first, once they got started, the dialogue turned into a lively debate. At one point Venerable Chödron made her point so effectively, the translator asked her jokingly, “Do you want to clap him?”

With the Dhauladhar range of the Himalayas as a backdrop, Venerable Chödron arrives at the Thösamling Institute for International Buddhist Women in Dharamsala, India, on April 5, 2008.
